I wonder how you create a living thing with your hands. How do you build something out of nothing? The thought of the task baffles me, but to my father, it is mundane.

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you what a magnificent doctor and artist you are! My two surgeries a few months ago - nose repair and facelift - changed my life. Everyone remarks how beautiful the work is. I feel I have lived on both sides of appearance; that is, going from droopy and haggard to looking vibrant and pleasing.

FAQ’s

Q: How long will it take me to recover from my procedure?
Recovery will depend on the type of surgery needed. This will be explained prior to your surgery. Specific information about each procedure is available on this website with additional details.  Expect some swelling and black and blue. Put aside the time you need to fully recover before returning to your normal activities. You will need to limit exercise after surgery to assist recovery.

Q: Will I have to stay overnight in the hospital?
Most procedures are performed as an outpatient. A forehead flap, rhinoplasty with rib graft, full facelift, abdominoplasty, or autogenous breast reconstruction will require an overnight stay.

Q: Should I stop taking my medications prior to surgery?
All medications containing aspirin, ibuprofen, and all vitamin and herbal supplements must be stopped two weeks for surgery.Their use is associated with excessive bleeding at surgery. A simple daily multivitamin can be continued. The other medications can be restarted 2 weeks after surgery. Routine cardiac, hypertensive and  asthma etc. medications should be continued and may be taken with a sip of water on the morning of surgery. Notify us if Coumadin, Plavix or other blood thinners have been prescribed by your doctor. They can increase the risk of surgery and may be modified or stopped under the care of your doctor. Do not stop them without discussion with this office and your regular doctor, however.

Q: Will I need to have preoperative lab work?
You will need a CBC (complete blood count) and EKG if you are over 55 years of age, potassium and electrolytes if you take a diuretic or water pill, and a mammogram if you are over 35 and are undergoing breast surgery.

Q: Where can I have my preoperative labs performed?
Your primary care physician can order and obtain your lab work for you or you may take our lab order to any lab of your choosing. Many patients have the lab work performed at St. Joseph’s outpatient center. Notify our office before you go, so we can send them your information, help make an appointment, and facilitate the process.

Q: Do I need to do anything special to prepare the area of surgery?

Simply wash and shampoo with soap and water daily. No special bra is required after breast surgery although a non-underwire, sports bra that snaps or zips in front is more comfortable.
