I wonder how you create a living thing with your hands. How do you build something out of nothing? The thought of the task baffles me, but to my father, it is mundane.

"About My Father"

A Daughter’s Perspective

"The person who knows one thing and does it better than anyone else, even if it only be the art of raising lentils, receives the crown he merits. If he raises all his energy to that end, he is a benefactor of mankind and is rewarded as such."
-Og Mandino

The summer after my first year of graduate school I worked part time in my father’s office as a receptionist. Within the first week, I was able to quickly differentiate between cosmetic and reconstructive patients, but not necessarily on a physical basis. Reconstructive patients, I learned, are quicker to make conversation and to share their story. One of the people with whom I became acquainted was a man who lost his nose and half his face to cancer. He told me he could scarcely speak or eat before his operations. Another was a young girl who suffered severe facial trauma. Highschool had been a nightmare. Now they can show their faces and likely not be given a second glance. What they wished for and what they received was the gift of looking normal, which is something most of us take for granted. My father has made me conscious of how fortunate I am in so many ways. I look "normal," I have traveled the world, and I’ve never known what it was like to truly want for anything.

I wonder how you create a living thing with your hands. How do you build something out of nothing? The thought of the task baffles me, but to my father it is mundane. It is his life’s work. And while most of the world’s population will never need to tap into his knowledge or utilize his services, those who do are forever changed.

More than observing his "fan club" of admiring surgical residents when he lectured in Barcelona, Spain, hearing his patients’ voices revealed to me the person my father really is. That person astounds me. When I was younger, I did not grasp his purpose outside of his role of father. There were moments when I did not understand why he devoted so much of his time to medicine. But I’ve grown up and seen there is a world outside of my own. Just as he is one of the most important people in my life, he is one of the most important people in his patients’ lives. He gave me life, but they tell me he gave them their lives back.
