I wonder how you create a living thing with your hands. How do you build something out of nothing? The thought of the task baffles me, but to my father, it is mundane.

Nasal and Facial Reconstruction Overview

What You Need to Know about Nasal and Facial Reconstruction

First, the defect is examined to determine what is missing anatomically – skin, cartilage or bone, and nasal or oral lining.

However, these anatomic layers do not describe what is missing aesthetically – the visible characteristics that “make” a nose, lip or cheek look normal.

Fortunately, although defects vary, the “Normal” does not. So the contralateral normal facial feature or the Ideal normal are used as a guide for the repair. The remaining “Normal” facial part is used as a pattern to rebuild the missing part.  Careful visual analysis then defines the aesthetic loss – the missing skin quality, border outline, or 3-dimensional shape that “make” a normal nose, lip or cheek. Dr. Frederick J. Menick offers a comprehensive overview of Nasal Reconstruction and Rhinoplasty on eMedicine, a web-based clinical reference guide. (Click the links to read the articles)

About Nasal Reconstruction

Nasal reconstruction is performed to repair a deformity or nasal injury after trauma, skin cancer, birth defects, immune disease or prior failed attempts at nasal repair.  Missing skin, cartilage support, and lining are replaced or reshaped to restore the appearance and function of a normal nose.  Depending upon the degree of injury, one or more operations may be required. What is a Surgical Plan?

Obviously, an in-person exam is vital.  This is combined with current photographs, old photographs, operative reports, and facial x-rays to outline an approach, establish priorities, and determine the best material and techniques to re-create the missing facial part.  The goal is to restore a normal appearance.  Although the result cannot be guaranteed, careful planning, aesthetic principles, and modern methods can most often provide a good result.

In many cases, initial information is provided through a preliminary phone call, email or mail.  Although no final decision for or against surgery can be made by the patient or surgeon until an in-person exam is performed, basic information can be provided and possible approaches considered, prior to coming to Tucson.
