World renowned reconstructive plastic surgeon, Dr. Frederick Menick recently completed the first leg of his international 2011 lecture schedule, and says education, innovation and proper planning from the plastic and reconstructive surgery community is essential.

According to the most recent statistics released by the American Society Plastic Surgery (ASPS), 5.3 million reconstructive plastic surgery procedures were performed in 2010. As a board-certified plastic surgeon in Tucson, AZ, Dr. Frederick Menick maintains a rigorous and diverse lecturing schedule dedicated to the advancement of reconstructive plastic surgery. By sharing his techniques with fellow reconstructive plastic surgeons, he hopes to improve the quality of reconstructive surgical results. Equally as important, Dr. Menick hopes to restore the confidence of patients around the world who need procedures such as facial reconstruction, nasal reconstruction, secondary rhinoplasty and Mohs surgery. “People want to look in the mirror and be themselves. They want to look normal. We recognize a face as being normal because it has a normal skin quality, a normal outline of the landmarks, a normal three dimensional shape.”

Thus far in 2011, Dr. Menick has delivered invited lectures around the world on facial and reconstructive and aesthetic nasal surgery or rhinoplasty, including the Advanced Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Workshop in Melbourne, Australia, the Thanc Foundation Symposium on Free Flap Reconstruction of the Head and Neck Defects: A Multidisciplinary Approach in White Plains, NY, and the keynote address at the annual meeting of the American College of MOHS Surgery. The final two stops on his spring lecture schedule took him to Barcelona, Spain for the joint annual meeting of the French Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Catalan Spanish Society of Plastic Surgery, and eventually to Baltimore, MD where he led a course on his state-of-the-art approach to comprehensive facial reconstruction sponsored by AO North America.

When delivering a keynote address on nasal reconstruction, participating as a speaker in a craniomaxillofacial course, or performing a complicated case, Dr. Menick says training, unique skills and proper planning are essential to a successful procedure. “Over the last 20 years, I have made a number of contributions to an aesthetic approach to facial reconstruction, where the goal is to restore things to normal, not just get them healed. Making them look normal and, hopefully, making it look good is my goal.”

About Dr. Menick

Frederick J. Menick, MD earned his medical degree from the Yale University Medical School. He then completed his general surgery residency at Stanford University and the University of Arizona, and his plastic surgery residency at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Menick is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and is a member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Reconstructive and Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons and is a past president of the Rhinoplasty Society.

Frederick J. Menick, MD is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in nasal reconstruction and rhinoplasty. He is the accomplished author of a range of texts, book chapters, and articles, the most recent of which is soon to be published in the February 2011 issue of the journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®. “Microvascular Repair of Heminasal, Subtotal, and Total Nasal Defects with a Folded Radial Forearm Flap and Full Thickness Forehead Flap,” describes Dr. Menick’s latest groundbreaking work with microvascular surgeon and coauthor Dr. Arthur Salibian.

Dr. Frederick J. Menick, board-certified plastic surgeon in Tucson, will publish an article in the February 2011 journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgery based on his innovative work in rhinoplasty and nasal reconstruction. Written in collaboration with microvascular surgeon Dr. Arthur Salibian, the article unveils a new technique for accomplishing complete nasal reconstruction in patients who have lost all cover, lining and support after trauma, cancer, immune disease, or cocaine injury. Its focus is on the restoration of a normal nose through the use of rib grafts, microvascular tissue from the forearm, and a forehead flap, which involves a three-stage technique developed by Dr. Menick over the last ten years.

Dr. Menick is dedicated to the advancement of the field of plastic surgery in Tucson and around the world, as is evidenced by his countless publications and steady international lecture schedule in support of the techniques he pioneers. He says, “cosmetic and reconstructive surgery are complementary – the aesthetic skill needed to enhance the attractiveness of a normal but imperfect nose or face can be used to define the tissue requirements and techniques needed to rebuild a nose lost to cancer or injury, and vice versa. The skills needed to rebuild the face deformed by cancer, trauma, or congenital deformity can also be applied to aesthetic surgery.” As a result, Dr. Menick’s innovations in the area of nasal and facial reconstruction are far reaching and his latest work is sure to improve the lives of many patients, both reconstructive and cosmetic. His previous papers on nasal surgery were awarded the James Barrett Brown Prize in Plastic Surgery in both 1990 and 2003. This award is given yearly by the American Association of Plastic Surgeons for the “most important contribution to Plastic Surgery” published in the United States.

About Dr. Menick

Dr. Menick is a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Menick possesses a great passion for helping these patients who have undergone severe facial trauma and decided long ago to focus his efforts exclusively to the practice of facial & nasal reconstruction. In addition to directly helping his patients, Dr. Menick is regarded as a valuable and integral member amongst the plastic surgery community for his ongoing contributions in the form of lectures, journal entries and 2 published textbooks based on the art & practice of nasal reconstruction.

Patient Response Letter to PIMA Medical Society Article about Dr. Menick

Letter to the Editor of PIMA Medical Society:

“I am a patient of Dr. Fred Menick (featured in the August September Sombrero). He has been taking care of me since March 2009.

I had a severe nasal distortion due to repeated surgeries and radiation therapy. The plastic and reconstructive surgeon who had been treating me in Phoenix felt that I needed expert care and recommended Dr. Menick, so since March my wife and I have been commuting between Phoenix and Tucson several times a month. Anyone who’s driven between the two cities and along Speedway will agree that this is not the most scenic or interesting drive. But it has certainly been worth it.

Dr. Menick has operated on me five times, the first requiring an overnight stay at Carondelet St. Joseph’s Hospital (where the care, incidentally has been first-rate), and the others outpatient surgeries, also at St. Joseph’s.

From the freakish nose that caused me to be self-conscious and caused difficulty breathing and sleeping, a symmetrical, “normal”-looking nose is emerging. Apart from the cosmetic improvement, my breathing has improved greatly.

It’s not over yet. The skin flap from my forehead that bridges from my eyebrow to the distal half of my nose has yet to be removed, and Dr. Menick plans a little more tweaking after that.

What strikes me about this gifted surgeon is his quiet competence, personal attention, and most of all, his meticulousness and attention to detail. “Close enough” is not good enough for him. It has to be perfect.

I urge any physician who has not seen his new book on nasal reconstruction to have a look at it. You’ll be amazed by the results he’s achieved with the most awful nasal deformities. The book should be available at the medical college library.

We in Arizona are very fortunate to have a surgeon of Dr. Menick’s abilities in our community.”

Sincerely,
Calvin L. Lutrin, M.D.
Phoenix

One of the world’s leading rhinoplasty and reconstructive surgeons is launching a comprehensive new website that provides visitors with state-of-the-art, educational tools to let them know of the many options available to help them restore and renew their appearance. Dr. Frederick J. Menick’s Arizona plastic and reconstructive surgery practice is opening new virtual doors on the worldwide web.
Dr. Frederick J. Menick has achieved a global reputation for being one of the leading experts in facial reconstruction and nose reshaping surgery. Now, he is giving patients virtual access into his Tucson, Arizona rhinoplasty practice with a comprehensive new website designed to provide a wide range of information about his services and how he can help people renew their appearance or restore facial features that have been subject to injury or deformity.
The new site embraces the ever-evolving technology of the internet to give patients a tour of Dr. Menick’s practice before even setting foot inside its doors. Using web video documentaries, on-line patient forms, before and after galleries, and detailed descriptions of procedures offered, Dr. Menick is able to provide a useful, interactive guide for patients to start making informed decisions on options that can meet their ultimate goals. Working in collaboration with Rosemont Media® a website design firm, Dr. Menick has crafted a new site that encompasses virtually all aspects of the surgical process, with pages devoted to what patients can expect pre- and post-operatively, as well as the details of the procedures themselves and the recovery process. He also provides patients with a meticulous biography and full listing of his credentials, and an updated blog with the latest news in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery and testimonials from some of his patients.
In addition to maxillofacial and nasal reconstruction surgery, Dr. Menick’s new website also details other procedures available, including facial cosmetic enhancement and breast augmentation for Tucson, Arizona patients and those visiting from around the world who are looking to improve body contours. Dr. Menick hopes that his new website gives patients a view into his overall philosophy and studied approach to plastic surgery, as well as his commitment to helping individuals who would simply like to enhance their appearance, or those who have had a mastectomy or suffered severe facial abnormalities and need to rebuild and restore what they have lost. “The goal is to restore things to normal, not just get them healed. Making it look normal and making it look good is my goal.”
With the new website, Dr. Menick hopes to offer those in the Tucson, Arizona area and patients traveling from across the globe a comprehensive range of information that’s conveyed in the most educational and user-friendly way possible, as well as giving them a window into numerous academic contributions and a 25-year history of practice in plastic surgery.
